Plymouth Youth Concert Band
The Plymouth Youth Concert Band was established in April 2005 and currently numbers some 29 young wind players and percussionists from Plymouth schools and beyond. The young musicians have a range of abilities from Grade III ABRSM to musical diplomas. Many members have been with the band for several years. The band is directed by Barrie Mills, Deputy Head of Plymouth Youth Music Service and former Director of Music of the Plymouth Royal Marines Band. The band repertoire, which is constantly updated, includes traditional band music, music from movies and shows and challenging contemporary pieces. The band performs regularly in public and they have supported Plymouth City Council at many prestigious events including Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe and bandstand concerts in Devonport Park. They also perform regular concerts for both local and national charities. Recent appearances include Plymouth Guildhall supporting Plymouth Symphony orchestra, a WW1 commemoration concert with the Phoenix Choir in July. Later this year the band will be playing for the Plymouth Festival of Remembrance & Plymouth Argyle’s Carol Service at Home Park and a performance at their last home game of 2018.
