Plymouth Youth Concert Band

The Plymouth Youth Concert Band was established in April 2005 and currently numbers some 25 young wind players from Plymouth schools and beyond. The young musicians have a range of abilities from Grade III ABRSM to musical diplomas. Many members have been with the band for several years. The band is directed by Barrie Mills, Deputy Head of Plymouth Youth Music Service and former Director of Music of the Plymouth Royal Marines Band assisted by Dennis Frere-Smith. The band repertoire, which is constantly updated, includes traditional band music, music from movies and shows and challenging contemporary pieces. The band performs regularly in public and they have supported Plymouth City Council at many prestigious events including Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe and a bandstand concert in Devonport Park. They also perform regular concerts for both local and national charities. Forthcoming appearances include Plymouth Pavilions for the 2017 Festival of Remembrance, Plymouth Argyle’s Carol Service at Home Park and a performance at their last home game of 2017. The band will also share the stage with the Plymouth Music Of The Night choir on Saturday 9th December for a spectacular Christmas concert in Methodist Central Hall, Plymouth.”
