Plymouth Youth Concert Band Summer Spectacular

Young musicians reunite for a very special occasion

On July 16th past and present members of Plymouth Youth Concert Band will be joining forces for a Summer Spectacular concert in Plymouth Guildhall.

First established in April 2005, the band was the first city-wide youth ensemble created by the newly-formed Plymouth Youth Music Service and it began with approximately 9 auditioned players. Barrie Mills, a former Director of Music in the Royal Marines was responsible for the formation of the band. The band soon grew and, ever since, has regularly performed at public events in and around the city.   On July 16th the band will be performing a very special concert which will feature at least 50 players on stage, all of whom are past and present members of the band.

The concert will take place at 7.00pm in the splendid surroundings of the Plymouth Guildhall – the very spot where the band held its very first rehearsal in April 2005.  All profits will be donated to Action For Children.

Many former members of the youth band have gone on to become professional musicians and composers and Barrie is very proud of the fact that at least 8 have joined the Royal Marines Band Service and three of them will be returning to play with the band.

.Fiona Pendreigh, Head of Plymouth Youth Music Service, said: ”

The Plymouth Youth Music Service is part of Plymouth City Council and provides children and young people with a range of musical opportunities from their very first instrumental lesson to membership of one of 12 established city-wide ensembles. As well as staging events for young musicians to perform in, the Service organises music groups, tutoring and networks to enable young people to get involved in all things musical.
