Summer Wind Band
The Summer Holiday Wind Band operates throughout the school summer holiday period has been running since 1989 and is underpinned by the City of Plymouth Concert Band.
The aim of SHWB is to give young instrument players the opportunity to play together in a full band, an experience — and discipline — that they may not otherwise enjoy. Also, the five week course ends with a professional style concert in front of a paying audience.
The band have several teachers, instrumental and academic, in the City of Plymouth Concert Band who attend the SHWB summer course and help to coach the young musicians. The sessions are held in Mount Gould Methodist Church, a safe and comfortable venue; the church authorities are extremely supportive of the whole programme. In past years a number of parents have been keen to become involved and particularly to see their children performing in the concert at the end of the course. Some photographs taken during a previous course and concert may be seen below.
At present they are able to cater for woodwind, brass and percussion players only, and they should be of Grade 3 or higher; the five week period is not really long enough to teach beginners. Unfortunately they cannot cater for string players, but if someone were to be interested in taking charge of a string section then they would be happy to provide the facilities and space.
This year the Summer Holiday Wind Band will rehearse at Mount Gould Methodist Church from 10.30am to 3.30pm (there are facilities in the church for eating a packed lunch from 12.30 to 1.30 pm) on Tuesday July 28th and August 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th , followed by a concert at 7.30 on Friday August 28th. Details are also shown below:
Coaching is free but there is a nominal charge of £1.50 per week towards the hire of the church.
The Band is run by Frank Huxham, Director of Music and Conductor of the City of Plymouth Concert Band. Frank was a brass peripatetic teacher for the area from 1979 to 1996, and has organised and conducted the Summer Holiday Wind Band since its inception in 1989. Always his aim has been to interest young musicians in band playing and the great pleasure in doing so. For any further information or help that Frank can give you or any young player.
