Hire or Purchase An Instrument

You can hire an instrument! Young players have a number of options for obtaining instruments. It is often best to hire an instrument in the initial stages rather than buy.

hire an instrument

The most reasonably priced instrument hire option is to go through our neighbouring Music Hubs in Devon and Cornwall. Pupils in Plymouth can choose to hire from either. The links to their Instrument Hire offers are:

Cornwall: Cornwall Music Education Hub – Instrument Hire

Devon: Hiring an instrument – Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs

There are also several private companies that offer instrument hire at reasonable prices. Minimum hire periods vary from 1 month to 3 months depending on which company you choose.

Whilst we cannot recommend any particular company above another, the following are all worth looking at to see if they have something suitable for you:

Purchase an Instrument

Parents of children who attend state schools can use the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme.

The Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme enables pupils at local authority schools to purchase instruments without paying VAT. As we all know, money is precious, which is why this is a great scheme that can really help parents access the instruments their children need and save money.

Does your child qualify for AIPS?

The rules are as follows:

The student must be in full time education at a Local Authority School
The student must be receiving music tuition at the school
The instrument must be appropriate for the pupils needs
The instrument must be used as part of their musical tuition
The instrument must be handed over from school to pupil in a designated teaching room
The instrument must be charged to the pupil/pupil’s parents at or below the schools (ex. VAT) cost

Contact your school for more information

If your school does not have its own application form for the scheme, most musical instrument retailers have a version on their websites.
