Plymouth Musical Activities Club (PMAC)

Plymouth Musical Activities Club (PMAC) is a music group for young people between the ages of 9 and 18.

Plymouth Musical Activities Club is a group for 9-18 year olds. Club night is every Thursday during term time from 7:00 – 9:15pm at Courtlands School in Eggbuckland. They charge £1.50 per young person, and this is to cover hire of the school (including for storage of equipment as well as club nights), additional security to lock-up late, and repair/maintenance/replacement of the equipment such as the sound desk, microphones, amplifiers, cables, music stands, microphone stands etc. They also have a van to transport equipment to events. There are a limited number of loan guitars for those who do not want to commit to buying their own straight away, which young people can take home for practice. There are also a few keyboards that remain stored at the club, which those without their own can use on Club nights only (these cannot be taken home).

The group is run by volunteers, all DBS checked, and who take safeguarding very seriously.

They teach acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, keyboard, percussion, and woodwind (flute and clarinet), as well as a dedicated singer’s group. Teaching is at all levels, so whether you/your child is a complete beginner, experienced, or expert, there is a group for you/them. If you/your child loves music but prefers to be more behind the scenes, there are opportunities to learn how to operate the sound desk (one of the most important jobs!).

It is a friendly group and does offer other activities outside the normal club nights, such as Fetes (they aim for 3 per year), a twice yearly concert in the Devonport Playhouse, a weekend away in the Dartmoor Centre every year, and activities like trampolining/bowling. The local activities are usually twice yearly and chosen by the junior committee. These activities are subsidised for all who wish to take part, and the PMAC Committee have access to a fund which helps to ensure that any families experiencing hardship/social inequalities are enabled to attend (discreetly).
